Nokia Lumia 635 vs Microsoft Lumia 640 XL, and the Nokia Lumia 1320 Too

By Rich W Woods

I love the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL. I have been having so much fun with it. Technically, it’s the successor to the Nokia Lumia 1320; however, we didn’t see a lot of the Lumia 1320 here in the United States. The only carrier that saw it was Cricket Wireless, a small carrier.

Needless to say, I don’t have a Lumia 1320 to compare the Lumia 640 XL to, so the next best thing is going to be the Nokia Lumia 635. Now, before I get into it, I want to point out a few things, because while I don’t have a Lumia 1320 on hand to compare it to, I have reviewed the Nokia Lumia 1320, so there are a few key points to make.

The Nokia Lumia 1320 was not a great phone. It was great at being a budget phablet; however, it was very thick, bulky, and heavy. Carrying it around in my pocket made me not want to carry it around in my pocket. It was very uncomfortable.

Nokia Lumia 635 vs Microsoft Lumia 640 Comparison: A Major Upgrade

By Rich W Woods

Today, we discovered that AdDuplex noticed a new Windows Phone with a 5.7″ 1080p display. We also saw that the Nokia Lumia 635 is the most used Windows Phone in the United States. This news comes two days after I received the successor to the Nokia Lumia 635, the Microsoft Lumia 640.

Microsoft announced the Lumia 640 in Barcelona at Mobile World Congress. It is my understanding that the device will be sold for $99.99 in the United States, or at least the carrier locked models will. If that is in fact the case, the Microsoft Lumia 640 will deliver a heck of a lot of value.

The 6xx series of Lumias has historically hung on the border between the low end and the mid-range. Lately, I’ve considered the Nokia Lumia 635 to be a high quality low end device that packs a lot of value for its price tag, rather than a mid-range that doesn’t quite deliver on what a mid-range should. The Microsoft Lumia 640 promises to be a full fledged mid-range device.

Microsoft Lumia 535 vs Nokia Lumia 635 Camera Comparison

By Rich W Woods

My process for putting the Microsoft Lumia 535 through its rounds by comparing it to different phones got thrown through a hoop when Microsoft asked for the Nokia Lumia 830 back. I had to compare it to the 830 early. I’m back on track. I compared it to the Nokia Lumia 530 and when I proved that the Lumia 535 is superior, I compared it to the Nokia Lumia 520. Now, it’s time to compare the Microsoft Lumia 535 to the Nokia Lumia 635.

The Microsoft Lumia 535 is Microsoft’s first Lumia since dropping the Nokia brand after Microsoft acquired Nokia’s devices and services division. The Microsoft Lumia 535 has some camera features that the Nokia Lumia 635 but the Lumia 635 has a better processor than the Lumia 535 does, so we’ll get into that in a bit.

Nokia Lumia 635 vs Nokia Lumia 830 Camera Comparison: Battle of the Mid-Range

By Rich W Woods

Two months after Nokia announced the Nokia Lumia 830, it has finally come to AT&T as of November 7. Microsoft is billing it as an affordable flagship, although the specs of the device would say that it is certainly a mid-range device at best. In fact, it uses the same processor as the $129 Nokia Lumia 635, a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 400.

This is not to say that the Nokia Lumia 830 is by any means as low end as the Nokia Lumia 635 is. The Nokia Lumia 830 uses a 10 MP pureview rear camera with a Carl Zeiss lensand it has an AMOLED display, so it looks beautiful. Also, the Nokia Lumia 635 doesn’t have a flash on the rear camera and it doesn’t have a front camera at all.

Nokia Lumia 635 vs Nokia Lumia 1320 Camera Comparison: David vs Goliath

By Rich W Woods

Nokia Lumia 635 1320The Nokia Lumia 635 and the Nokia Lumia 1320 have quite a bit in common. They are both budget phones, they both have low resolution LCD displays, they both use Snapdragon 400 processors, and they both have 5 MP rear cameras.

The Nokia Lumia 1320 does have a few bells and whistles that the Lumia 635 does not. It has a flash on the rear camera and it has a front camera. Oh yea, did I mention that it’s 6″ in size?

OnePlus One vs Nokia Lumia 635 Camera Comparison

By Rich W Woods

Last Sunday, the Nokia Lumia 530 was released in the United States. While it is supposed to be the successor to the Nokia Lumia 520, the specs are inferior to the Nokia Lumia 520. In fact, the camera can’t even focus. I ended up finding that the Nokia Lumia 635 would be a much better idea for comparisons, even though it has been available since June.

I have been spending a lot of time with the Nokia Lumia 635 lately along with the Nokia Lumia 530, Moto G, Moto XiPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. I compared the camera to the Moto G, Nokia Lumia 530, iPhone 6, Moto X, and Nokia Lumia 1020; however, the one community that would crucify me if I don’t include them is the OnePlus community, so here it is.

Moto X vs Nokia Lumia 635: Camera Comparison

By Rich W Woods

This is a crazy month if you follow the smart phone industry. Since September 3, we have heard announcements for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge, Sony Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Moto X, Moto G, HTC Desire 820, Desire Eye, Nokia Lumia 730, Lumia 735, Lumia 830, and Sony Xperia Z3v. I’m sure I missed one or two.

I’ve been spending a lot of time with these phones and when the Nokia Lumia 530 was released last Sunday in the United States, I got one to review it and the camera was a huge disappointment. It doesn’t focus. I got the Nokia Lumia 635 to compare it to and I am super psyched about it.

Nokia Lumia 635 vs Nokia Lumia 1020 Camera Comparison: The Results May Surprise You

By Rich W Woods

Ever since Nokia sent me a Nokia Lumia 635 to review, I’ve been itching to compare it to the Nokia Lumia 1020. After all, 90% of the time, when you are looking at a photo from a Nokia Lumia 1020, it’s a 5 MP photo. This will be a comparison to see if the 5 MP photo from the Nokia Lumia 635 can stand up to the Nokia Lumia 1020.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 has three settings: 5 MP JPEG, 5 MP JPEG and 35 MP JPEG, and 5 MP JPEG and 35 MP DNG. The 35 MP photo will be 38 MP if the user changes the aspect ratio to 4:3. On the first or the third setting, the user is only seeing a 5 MP photo unless he opens the DNG photo in Photoshop or another photo editing app. If the user shares a photo, it uses the low resolution photo. The only time it uses the high resolution photo is when the user zooms in on the image.

Moto G vs Nokia Lumia 635 Camera Comparison: Battle of the Budget Phones

By Rich W Woods

We spend a lot of time talking about our iPhones, Moto Xs, OnePlus Ones, HTC One M8s, Nokia Lumia 930s, and our LG G3s with their 2.5 GHz Snapdragon 801 processors and 2 or 3 GB RAM. These phones have up to 20 MP rear cameras and up to 5 MP front cameras. Some of them take 4K video. Some of them support RAW photos. The LG G3 has a laser focused camera. The Moto X is always listening.

If you grew up in the 90s like I did, you will have a hard time reciting the specs of the OnePlus One without following it up with “arg arg arg more power” like Tim Allen used to do in Home Improvement.

We spend so much time with these super-powered phones that when a mid-range phone like the Moto G or the Nokia Lumia 635 comes our way, we just sort of say that they are great phones, but we pass them up because they certainly wouldn’t be able to meet our needs.

iPhone 6 vs Nokia Lumia 635 Camera Comparison: Similar Specs, Different Price Part 2

By Rich W Woods

Earlier today, I wrote a comparison of the Moto G and the iPhone 6. After all, they have almost identical specs but that price is vastly different. The specs between the Nokia Lumia 635 and the iPhone 6 are a little less similar than the iPhone 6 and the Moto G, but they’re still pretty close.

Note that iOS is built for the iPhone, so it doesn’t require as much power as Windows Phone or Android does, so a high end iPhone has lower specs than a mid-range Android or Windows Phone.
