Windows 10 “Subset” Update for Windows RT Available in September

If you’re the Windows RT user, you’re probably a little stung that Microsoft has left you out in the cold for Windows 10. Microsoft did promise a subset of Windows 10 features that will come as an update for the person that uses a Windows RT PC.

Good news! That update is coming in September, called Windows RT 8.1 Update 3. I know I’m forgetting something, but I have no clue when Update 2 was.

HTC One M9 for Windows May Be a Reality

Last year, the HTC One M8 for Windows was possibly the most revolutionary device that was released. For the first time, consumers could walk into a cell phone store, pick a certain phone, and have a choice in the OS that is preinstalled on it when they buy it.

When HTC announced the HTC One M9 at Mobile World Congress in March, Windows Phone fans universally asked the same question: “What about a Windows Phone model?”

It’s a bit of a tricky issue. You see, Windows Phone in its current form doesn’t support the Snapdragon 810 processor. You might not realize that Windows Phone 8 only supported the dual core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor. Windows Phone 8.1 added the Snapdragon 200, 400, and 800. Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 added support for Snapdragon 801 (for the HTC One M8) and Update 2 added support for the Snapdragon 410.

Microsoft Needs Some Big News for the Windows 10 Launch

By Rich W Woods

Most Microsoft fans, the ones not invested in OneDrive, are really excited about Windows 10. The others want to be excited but it actually stings because they can’t be. But I digress…

Everyone is excited about Windows 10 as well as Windows 10 Mobile, as they should be. There’s big things coming in Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile. For one thing, Windows 10 Mobile is finally going to catch up Microsoft’s mobile platform with the rest of the world.

But it’s not enough. If you’re a Windows Phone fan, then you recall that when Windows Phone 7 was lacking features, you were told, “Wait for Windows Phone 8. It will fix it.” When Windows Phone 8 was lacking features, you were told, “Wait for Windows Phone 8.1. It will fix it.” Now that we have Windows Phone 8.1, we’ve been told “Wait for Windows 10. It’s going to fix everything.”

Windows 10 Mobile Build 10166: Walk Through

Last Friday, Microsoft left us with another Windows 10 Mobile build. This time, it’s build 10166. The week before, we received Windows 10 Mobile Build 10149, which most were shocked to find how fantastic this build was. There were still some issues, so I had high hopes for Windows 10 Mobile build 10166.

When I went to install the new build on the five phones that I run the Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview on, I had two successful installs, two bricked phones, and one that just didn’t take. I ended up using the Windows Phone Recovery Tool and installed from there. My high hopes were now gone.

I’ve been using the build since as a daily driver to test it. It’s been working pretty well since then. Check out the video.

Why Windows Phone will Never Succeed

By Rich W Woods

You might have noticed that there’s been a lot of doom and gloom articles about Windows Phone lately. Microsoft cut 7,800 employees from their phone division. They took almost an $8 billion write-off from the acquisition of Nokia. They killed a bunch of apps that no one uses.

Some have said that Windows Phone is dead; however, they mean Lumia (not all Windows Phones are Lumias). Also, they’re wrong. Microsoft is going to continue to make Lumias, except they just won’t be making new 500 models every year.

I’m not here to tell you that Windows Phone is dead, or even that it’s dying. I’m here to tell you why it will never be successful. I’m not going to say that it’s because of the hardware because hardware is coming. I’m not going to say that it’s because Microsoft showed up too late because that’s just idiotic. I’m not going to tell you that it’s because of the app gap because that’s shortsighted.

NOTE: I’m also not here to hate on Windows Phone. Windows Phone is my personal favorite mobile operating system. My current daily driver is the gold Nokia Lumia 930 and I love it. I switched to it from iPhone 6.

Microsoft Releases Windows 10 Mobile Build 10166

By Rich W Woods

Today, Microsoft released Windows 10 Mobile build 10166. This is a very important build, if you ask me. It’s mostly all about bug fixes. They don’t have a laundry list of new features like they have in every build thus far.

The last Windows 10 Mobile build was pretty great. Surprisingly great, in fact. I was all set to use it on my daily driver, but I figured that before I installed it on my gold Lumia 930, I’d try it out on my Lumia Icon first, since they’re the same phone. I made it all of two hours.

All bug fixes and no features means we’re getting close to RTM. Get ready. It’s going to be an interesting second half of the year.

Gabe Aul had this to say:

A List of All of the Windows 10 Debacles

By Rich W Woods

Ah, Windows 10. Everyone is so excited about it; however, it seems like every week there’s another big mess from Microsoft’s inability to communicate. In reality, this whole thing has been a complete mess.

I’m compiling a list of the complete and utter mess this whole thing has been, from announcements that Microsoft has redacted to actual issues with Windows 10. Have a look at what a complete fucking mess this has been.

Windows 10 Mobile Build 10149: Time to Install It?

By Rich W Woods

Last week, Microsoft released Windows 10 Mobile Build 10149. The build is actually pretty incredible. After publishing the walk through video and being pretty amazed at how well this build works, the most frequent question I was asked was if this build is ready for people to install it on their daily driver.

Check out the video.

Hands On with Windows 10 Mobile Build 10149

By Rich W Woods

Yesterday, Microsoft released the fifth iteration of the Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview, build 10149. It’s probably the first decent build I’ve seen so far. The first Windows 10 Mobile build only worked on six Lumias. The second worked on all but the flagships. The third bricked a few phones. The fourth was very buggy.

I find this build to be extremely stable. Have a look at Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10149.
