Microsoft Lumia 640 XL vs Nokia Lumia 1020 Comparison

By Rich W Woods

Yesterday, we compared the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL to the Nokia Lumia Icon. The results were surprising. While the Lumia Icon clearly beat the Lumia 640 XL in terms of performance, the Lumia 640 XL had the better camera. Now it’s time to compare the Lumia 640 XL to the legendary Nokia Lumia 1020.

I’m not expecting the Lumia 640 XL to outperform the Nokia Lumia 1020. The Nokia Lumia 1020 is widely known as the best smart phone camera ever, although Microsoft is not planning a successor. I do want to see how close it is. Also, I expect the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL to outperform the Nokia Lumia 1020 in performance tests.

Let me tell you a story. Once upon a time, the Nokia Lumia 1020 was a flagship Windows Phone. That was true for about four months until the Nokia Lumia 1520 came out. You see, every single Windows Phone 8 device made before November 2013 used a dual core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor, since that’s all Windows Phone could support.

Within a year, Windows Phone 8.1 had shipped and Windows Phone itself went from being light and missing features to being much heavier and requiring a quad core processor for decent performance. Remember, Windows Phone was using Snapdragon S4 when Android was using Snapdragon 800. By the time a year had passed, even the super low end Nokia Lumia 530 would get better performance benchmarks than the Nokia Lumia 1020.

Despite the fact that at this point, it’s a terrible phone, the 41 MP Pureview camera has stood the test of time and likely will continue to do so. It’s not the resolution though. It’s the 1/1.5″ sensor and the xenon flash as well.

Based on the earlier tests I’ve done so far, the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL has the second best Lumia Camera that exists.

Microsoft Lumia 640 XL vs Nokia Lumia 1020: Rear Camera

The Microsoft Lumia 640 XL’s 13 MP sensor leaves you with a 13 MP image. The Nokia Lumia 1020 is a bit more complicated. The Nokia Lumia 1020’s 41 MP sensor takes a 38 MP image and oversamples it down to 5 MP. It leaves the 38 MP image behind so the user can zoom in on the image without losing quality.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 also allows for the user to save a RAW file; however, it does not allow for the option to save a RAW file and a high resolution JPEG, so choose wisely. Remember that if you plan to resize the image, you can’t use the DNG RAW file. Unfortunately, Microsoft decided to leave the RAW feature out of the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL. Of course, this is not a feature that will be used by 99% of users, especially of a mid-range phone.

One big advantage that the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL has over the Nokia Lumia 1020 is that it uses Lumia Camera 5, where the Nokia Lumia 1020 uses Lumia Camera Classic. Lumia Camera 5 has some awesome features, such as Rich Capture. The Nokia Lumia 1020 also never got support for features such as Living Images.

Ultimately, all the Lumia 1020 has going for it is the sheer quality of the camera. All of the features that have been added to Lumia cameras have not been added to the Nokia Lumia 1020, mostly because of the high powered camera being powered by a low end processor.

I have to say that I’m equally impressed with the daylight photos. There were some cases where the colors were more balanced on the Nokia Lumia 1020. One thing is for sure, nothing is going to beat the low light performance of the Nokia Lumia 1020. The Microsoft Lumia 640 certainly holds its own, but nothing beats the Lumia 1020.

Microsoft Lumia 640 XL vs Nokia Lumia 1020: Benchmarks

I am not a fan of benchmarks. They so rarely provide any insight into real world usage of a device. They typically only provide fuel for trolls that have created an Apple vs Android war in their heads. Unfortunately, benchmarks are the best tool we have for writing down the performance of a device.

Lumia 640 XL 1020 Battery

lumia 640 xl 1020As we can see, the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL gets much better battery life than the Nokia Lumia 1020 and it also gets better performance scores. Neither of that is surprising. The Lumia 1020 uses such an ancient processor and a much smaller battery than the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL.

Microsoft Lumia 640 XL vs Nokia Lumia 1020: Conclusion

By comparing the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL to the Nokia Lumia Icon and the Nokia Lumia 1020, we can successfully show that the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL is one of the best Lumias on the market, and depending on what you want from a phone, it could be THE best Lumia.

  • Stefab

Both phones produce excellent daylight pictures, but the night pictures make the 1020 a winner. However, I would like to see picture comparison with similar mega-pixels.

    • Well, I use the 5 MP images from the Lumia 1020. The reason is because no one is going to be able to tell the difference. The images are all 4:3, so even a 4K display is going to have scale the images down to about 5 MP (maybe between 5 and 6 MP, but the gallery doesn’t take up the whole screen).
