Nokia Lumia 830 vs Sony Xperia Z3 Compact Camera Comparison

By Rich W Woods

When Microsoft first announced Nokia’s first ever affordable flagship, I was skeptical. After all, it uses the same Snapdragon 400 processor as the Nokia Lumia 635. In case you don’t know much about smart phone processors, Snapdragon 400 is the low end of the mid-range; however, the more I use the Nokia Lumia 830, the more impressed I am with it.

As with all new review units that come in, I’ve been doing lots of camera comparisons. The first camera I compared the Nokia Lumia 830 to was the Nokia Lumia 635. When the Lumia 830 did so well., I compared it to the Lumia 1020. Being as impressed as I was with the camera on the Nokia Lumia 830, I then compared it to the OnePlus One and the iPhone 6. The 10 MP Pureview camera more than gets the job done. Possibly the best smart phone camera on the market comes from the Sony Xperia Z3, so this will be something of a gold standard test.

Let’s take a quick look at those specs and figure out what they mean. The resolution of the display on the Nokia Lumia 830 has a slightly lower resolution than the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact; however, it is going to look better since it uses AMOLED technology which brings more vibrant colors and blacker clack colors.

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is a much more powerful phone, using a 2.5 GHz Snapdragon 801 processor and 2 GB of RAM. This is to be expected as the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is a flagship device and the Nokia Lumia 830 is a mid-range device.

Nokia Lumia 830 vs Sony Xperia Z3 Compact: Rear Camera

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact has the second highest resolution camera on the smart phone market, coming in at 20.7 MP behind the Nokia Lumia 1020 with 41 MP. The Nokia Lumia 830 uses a 10 MP Pureview camera, so the resolution won’t make a difference unless the image is cropped. A 720p display is less than 1 MP, 1080p is less than 2.1 MP, a 1440p display is less than 3.7 MP, and a 4K display is less than 8.3 MP, so the resolution of the photo is higher than the resolution of the display.

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact has a larger aperture than the Nokia Lumia 830, coming in at F/2. This means that the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact should have a smaller depth of field, meaning that the objects in the background of the image will be less focused on the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact also has a larger sensor, meaning that more light should be allowed in allowing for better low light performance.

Ok, the first thing that you need to know is that the picture of the gazebo was taken at the same time with each camera. I know it almost appears that the photo taken with the Nokia Lumia 830 was taken in daylight but that’s not the case.

We can see that the theory about the depth of field was correct and the background is more focused in the photos taken with the Nokia Lumia 830; however, due to the camera sensor size, we expected low light performance to be better with the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. This was not the case. In fact, it is amazing how little grain is in the photos taken with the Nokia Lumia 830.

As far as the daytime photos go, I would still say that the Nokia Lumia 830 is the winner. In most cases, the colors look more vibrant with the Nokia Lumia 830 without becoming oversaturated. There is, of course, an exception to the rule with the photo of the pink flowers in the middle of the gallery.

Nokia Lumia 830 vs Sony Xperia Z3 Compact: Front Camera

The Nokia Lumia 830 has a 0.9 MP front facing camera, which is exactly 720p. Meanwhile, the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact has a 2.2 MP front camera, which is just north of 1080p. Although the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact has a higher resolution front camera, it has underperformed in earlier camera comparisons.

The results are as I feared. While Sony has a stellar rear facing camera, they really need to put some work into the front facing camera. There is no reason that the photos should be that blurry.

The Nokia Lumia 830 is by no means the best front facing camera on the market. It’s probably as good as it can be at 0.9 MP, although there is only so good that 0.9 MP can be. It’s still better than the 2.2 MP front camera on the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact.

Let me know what you think. Vote in the poll for which camera you think is better. Think I’m an idiot? Leave a comment and let me know!

A bigger aperture on sensors this size won’t make any noticeable difference in depth of field in every day use. Also, a bigger sensor doesn’t automatically mean better low light performance if the sensor is overcrowded with pixels, leaving the pixels to be very tiny, thus ending up with poor light performance. A good ratio between the sensor size and the amount of pixels is key. The Nokia seems to have the healthier ratio here, so contrary to what you put forth here, one would expect the Nokia 830 to have the better low light performance, and indeed it has. Of course more factors play a part in a digital (phone) camera’s image quality.

The photos taken with the Z3 are 8 MP. In fact, you have to go into manual mode just to take a 20 MP shot, so that ratio might be different from what you’re thinking.
