At For the Love of Tech, we do lots of camera comparisons. No matter what phone I happen to be working with in a certain week, I have to compare that phone’s camera to that of the OnePlus One. After all, the OnePlus community is a tightly knit community and I am proud to be a part of it.
Throughout the months, comparing the OnePlus One to the Sony Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Samsung Galaxy Note 4, iPhone 6, Nokia Lumia 1020, HTC One M8, Moto X, and more, one phone has been notably left out: the LG G3. Since I was able to obtain an LG G3 for my round of camera comparisons with the Sony Xperia Z3, it seems that it’s about time to compare the OnePlus One to the LG G3.
OnePlus One vs LG G3: Specs
|OnePlus One||LG G3|
|Processor||2.5 GHz Snapdragon 801||2.5 GHz Snapdragon 801|
|Display||5.5″, 1080p, 401 ppi, LCD||5.5″, 1440p, 524 ppi, LCD|
|Body||152.9×75.9×8.9 mm, 162 g||146.3×74.6×8.9 mm, 149 g|
|Camera||13 MP, 4128×3096, 5 MP Front||13 MP, 4160×3120, 2.1 MP Front|
|Video||4K – 30 fps, 1080p – 60 fps, 720p – 120 fps, Front 1080p – 30 fps||4K – 30 fps, 1080p – 30 fps, Front 1080p – 30 fps|
|Storage||16/64 GB||16/32 GB, Expandable to 128 GB|
|RAM||3 GB||2/3 GB, respective to Internal Storage|
Obviously, the OnePlus One has better specs than the LG G3. While most of the specs are even, the OnePlus One has a better front facing camera, it takes better video, it has more RAM in the 16 GB model, and it’s half the price.
Another really important thing to remember is the screen resolution. The LG G3 is 1440p and the OnePlus One is 1080p, meaning that there are twice as many pixels for the LG G3’s processor to push than the OnePlus One. Apple consider’s 326 ppi to be Retina, meaning that from an average distance, the user cannot see any pixellation at 326 ppi. This means that the OnePlus One’s 1080p display is surely enough, and the 1440p display of the LG G3 is a waste of processor power.
OnePlus One vs LG G3: Rear Camera
Both the OnePlus One and the LG G3 use a 13 MP rear camera with a 1/3.06″ sensor. The LG G3 has a smaller aperture meaning that it should have a greater depth of field.
The OnePlus One supports RAW photos, a feature that will be important to professional photographers. If you don’t know how to work with a RAW photo, it really is not something you should bother with.
The big feature of the LG G3 camera is that it is laser focused. This means that the user can take a sharp photo at night or even in the fog, not that we take a lot of photos at night or in the fog.

Obviously, both of these phones have fantastic cameras. In fact, it seems to me that some photos look better with the OnePlus One where others look better with the LG G3.
It is clear that the OnePlus One lets in more light than the LG G3, which is interesting because they both have the same sensor size as well as the same resolution. The OnePlus One has a larger aperture, which is why the background is more focused in the photos taken with the LG G3.
The front facing camera of the OnePlus One clearly blows away the front facing camera of the LG G3. While the front camera of the OnePlus One has a much higher resolution than the 2.1 MP LG G3 at 5 MP, I still stand by my word that it’s not the reason. Take a look at the comparison of the OnePlus One and the iPhone 6 Plus. The iPhone holds its own at 1.2 MP.
OnePlus One vs LG G3: Overall
Both the OnePlus One and the LG G3 have quite a bit in common. They both have 5.5″ LCD displays, they both use a 2.5 GHz Snapdragon 801 processor, they both have 13 MP rear cameras with a 1/3.06″ sensor, and they both use 3 GB of RAM (2 GB in the 16 GB LG G3).
In an overall comparison, I prefer the OnePlus One. It is virtually impossible to tell the difference between 1080p and 1440p on a 5.5″ display and the LG G3 uses the exact same processor to push twice as many pixels in the same amount of space.
Another factor to consider is the price. The LG G3 starts at $599 while the OnePlus One cost $349 for the 64 GB model. The OnePlus One records 4K at 30 fps, 1080p at 60 fps, and 720p at 120 fps while the LG G3 can’t break 30 fps. If you like to take video with your phone, the LG G3 is certainly not for you.
But this is a camera comparison, right? Vote in the poll for which camera you think is better or leave a comment if you have something to say.
