Sony Xperia Z3 Compact vs OnePlus One Camera Comparison

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact vs OnePlus One Camera Comparison

By Rich W Woods

It has been a week of camera comparisons. Since the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 came out last week, the Sony Xperia Z3v came out this week, and the Sony Xperia Z3 come out next week, I have been spending a lot of time working with the Sony Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact, and Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

I thought that comparing the Sony Xperia Z3 to the OnePlus One would be enough; however, when I compared the camera of the Sony Xperia Z3 and the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, there were some differences, and if we are nothing else here, we are thorough with camera comparisons. So here is goes. The camera comparison of the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact and the OnePlus One.

A very important feature to account for with the OnePlus One is that it supports RAW photos. If you are a professional photographer, the OnePlus One is certainly going to be the choice.

On the other hand, the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact has a physical camera button, one of my favorite features on a smart phone. With the 4.6″ display, it is just the right size to really give it the feel of a digital camera.

As far as speed goes, the Sony Xperia Z3 is faster. A better device to compare the speed of the camera to is the Nokia Lumia 930 since they’re both 20 MP and the Xperia Z3 Compact is much faster. The camera on the OnePlus One is fast, but not quite as fast.

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact vs OnePlus One: Rear Camera

Both the camera on the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact and the camera on the OnePlus One have a high enough resolution to where the user won’t be able to tell the difference. A 720p display is less than 1 MP, a 1080p display is less than 2.1 MP, a 1440p display is less than 3.7 MP, and a 4K display is less than 8.3 MP. The benefit of a higher resolution photo is the ability to zoom without losing any quality.

Both of these cameras take beautiful photos. Clearly, the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact does better in low light and the OnePlus One is terrible with the flash.

As far as daylight goes, it is generally a toss-up as to the user’s preferences. Some of the photos from the OnePlus One tend to look just a bit washed out sometimes. Again, if you know how to use a RAW file, then it doesn’t matter how the photo comes out.

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact vs OnePlus One: Front Camera

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact uses a 2.2 MP front camera while the OnePlus One uses a 5 MP front camera. While megapixels don’t matter on a rear camera, they do on a front camera. This is because front cameras are lower resolution cameras.

Just like when we compared the OnePlus One to the full size Sony Xperia Z3, the OnePlus One blows it away. The reason for this is not the 2.2 MP resolution of the photo, considering how well Apple does with a 1.2 MP resolution in the front facing camera of the iPhone 6. It’s just something Sony has to fix in a software update.

In the end, I think it’s a toss-up between the two. I think that when the Sony Xperia Z3 went up against the OnePlus One, Sony did a bit better. I think this battle is a bit more even.

But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Vote for which you think is better in the poll below or leave a comment if you have something to say.

If you’re going to do a side-by-side comparison then it makes sense to keep specs/pictures on the same side each time. This article starts with the Xperia specs on the left, then the OnePlus pics on the left, then the Xperia front cam pics on the left. Confusing and poorly done.

    • I apologize for that. Originally, the Xperia photos were on the left side. Usually it goes in the same order as the title. Unfortunately, when the Sony Xperia Z3 photos were on the left, it would make an extra space on the left side. The problem was fixed by changing the order of the pictures.
